There has always been debate on whether The Australian Golf Club is the oldest golf club in Australia, with Royal Melbourne and the Bothwell Club in Tasmania disputing that honour.The Australian Golf Club was formed in 1882 and has remained active since, although for some time it was without a course. It started in the Moore Park - Sydney Cricket Ground area and has had a number of homes. In 1905, a course on the present site at Kensington was opened for play. The current layout, featuring moderated undulations and water hazards was redesigned by Jack Nicklaus in 1977.
